Using an AI-Powered Machine and Algae to Combat Climate Change

Artificial Intelligence company Hypergiant is working to combat climate change by utilizing an ancient, abundant, carbon consuming microorganism—algae. The company has developed an AI-powered machine called the EOS bioreactor which can optimize the growing environment for oceanic microalgae. The reactor uses algae to capture carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. AI is used to optimize the growing conditions of the algae, limiting the need to monitor or maintain the reactor in the field. With optimized conditions, a single reactor (about the size of a refrigerator) can capture as much carbon as an acre of trees. After the carbon dioxide is captured, the algae can be dried and used in animal feed, fertilizer, or in a variety of consumer products. The company plans to release the plans for the EOS bioreactor so that others can build their own.
