Cellulose Safety Resources
The resources on this website were developed by Vireo Advisors with support from P3Nano. P3Nano is a public-private partnership between the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities and the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Lab that brings together industry and academic experts to develop and promote cellulose nanotechnology research. P3Nano has been funding research on cellulose nanomaterials for the last decade to promote their safe and responsible commercialization.

Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Templates
These Safety Data Sheet (SDS) templates (for cellulose nanocrystals, cellulose nanofibrils, and TEMPO cellulose nanofibrils) are populated with information for the 16 categories of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) information required by the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), and can be used by manufacturers to develop their own SDSs, tailored to their material.
Note: These templates are intended to serve as guiding documents in the development of SDS for manufacturers and users of cellulose nanomaterials. SDS are generally developed by qualified HSE personnel and need to be tailored to a manufacturer’s material. Contact us if you have any questions.

Worker Handling Guide
This document is intended as a guide for people working with cellulose nanomaterials. It explains some of the safety concerns, the current knowledge addressing these concerns, and safety management practices for the workplace. It is based on expert knowledge and publicly available resources, including government agency guidance and peer-reviewed literature.
This guidance does not replace current industry practices or standards and is intended to provide supplemental information useful for people working with cellulose nanomaterials.
The 2024 Directory of
Cellulose Nanomaterials
This Directory, created by Biobased Markets, is a global listing of producers of nanocellulose, providers of technology related to nanocellulose, and research organizations and universities working with nanocellulose.
CN Safer-by-Design-Toolbox
A project funded by P3Nano titled, “Safer-by-Design Toolbox to Advance Safer Manufacturing of Functionalized CNs” (SbD Toolbox Project) developed a Safer-by-Design Toolbox (SbD Toolbox) to screen the safety of novel forms of CNs for use in multiple commercial products. The toolbox includes a suite of physical, chemical, and toxicological testing methods for pre-commercial safety evaluations, as well as a compendium of safety data that has been generated to date for first-generation CNs (e.g., unmodified MFC) and priority second-generation CNs including sulfated (acid hydrolyzed) and carboxyl (TEMPO-oxidized, periodate-chlorite oxidized) surface chemistries. The SbD Toolbox is free and openly available to all stakeholders in the CN space.

Research on Cellulose Nanomaterials
Vireo Advisors collaborates with governmental, academic, and industry stakeholders in the cellulose nanomaterial (CN) space. Our collaborators are located worldwide and are involved in CN research spanning physical and chemical testing, detection and quantification, and safety testing. We draw upon this network to assist manufacturers and end-users of CNs to navigate health, safety and regulatory compliance for these materials.
