The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) released a new guide for entrepreneurial enterprises in the nanotechnology sector, entitled "Building a Safety Program to Protect the Nanotechnology Workforce: A Guide for Small to Medium-Sized Enterprises". The Lautenberg Act is Enacted, Providing Significant Reform to the U. S. Toxic Substances Control Act. On June 22, 2016 President Obama signed the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act (Lautenberg Act) which took effect immediately, amending the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). READ MORE.
The Swedish Chemicals Agency (KEMI) Proposes New Nanomaterial Reporting Requirements. Under a proposal from KEMI, Swedish companies reporting products to the Products Register will soon need to provide further information on any nanomaterials contained within the product. READ MORE.
German Environmental Agency Publishes Recommendations on Environmental Regulations of Nanomaterials. A report entitled ‘Nanomaterials in the Environment: Current State of Knowledge and Regulations on Chemical Safety’ was published by the German Environmental Agency last month. READ MORE.
Second Edition of "Working Safely with Nanomaterials in Research and Development" Released by UK NanoSafety Group. The report offers guidance on reducing potential health hazards that can arise from exposure when working with nanomaterials during research and development. READ MORE.
2014 Petition for EU-Wide Ban on Nanoparticles is Denied. A 2014 petition calling for a ban on nanoparticles in the European Union has been denied by the European Commission (EC) in their notice to the European Parliament. READ MORE.
NNI and CPSC Publish Workshop Report on Quantifying Exposure to Nanomaterials. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) released a report summarizing the Quantifying Exposure to Engineered Nanomaterials (QEEN) from Manufactured Products, Addressing Environmental, Health and Safety Implications Workshop that was held July 7-8th, 2015 in Arlington, Virginia. New Reports Highlight the Safety of Nanomaterials in Food and Food Contact Substances. An article published on Nanowerk highlighted two recently released reports from Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) on the safety of nanoparticles in food. READ MORE.
Paper Highlights Experimental Modification and Recommendations for Using an Alternative Testing Strategy for Nanomaterials. A review published in Archives of Toxicology this month evaluated the applicability of OECD Test Guideline 210 (Fish, Early-life Stages) to characterize the ecotoxicity of engineered nanomaterials. An opinion piece published in Fibers this month by Camarero-Espinosa and colleagues highlighted the tremendous potential of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) for a wide range of consumer applications. Halappanavar Group Publishes Meta-analysis of Studies on Carbon Nanotubes, Carbon Black and Titanium Dioxide to Identify Pulmonary Disease Outcomes for Nanomaterials. The researchers were able to identify the biological processes from exposure to three types of nanomaterials and how it contributes to disease. READ MORE.
OECD has Released Summary Dossiers for Nanomaterials. With the completion of the OECD Sponsorship Programme for the Testing of Manufactured Nanomaterials, dossiers have been compiled on the environmental fate and safety of 11 nanomaterials from testing sponsored by countries around the world. Highlights of the 2016 TAPPI International Conference on Nanotechnology for Renewable Materials. This year I wore the 5+ year member ribbon at the TAPPI Nanotechnology Conference. Since my first meeting in 2009 (thank you for inviting me Lori Sheremeta!), the meeting has grown from mostly academic reports and basic nanocellulose science to a diverse range of topics on the technologies, applications, characterization and safety!
