"Nanofish" Could be Used as Targeted Medicine Delivery

Jinxing Li of the University of California, San Diego, along with his colleagues, have created metallic nanofish which are 100 times smaller than a grain of sand and could soon be used to guide medicine to certain areas of the body. The nanofish were given their name because of the way they mimic the swimming style of a fish. This swimming motion is created when a moving magnetic field is applied to the nanofish which is made of pieces of gold and nickel linked by silver. Each piece of gold and silver are about 800 nanometers long.

According to Li, the nanofish "could be useful for medicine delivery, non-invasive surgery, and single cell manipulation". Li & his colleagues are continuing their efforts to explore applications for their nanofish.
