Researchers Develop an Eco-friendly Flame Retardant using Cellulose Nanocrystals

A recent journal article reported researchers in Korea developed an environmentally friendly flame retardant using cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). This new material might be used in place of traditional halogenated flame retardants, which can be toxic to humans and the environment. The new flame retardant involves altering NCC using a chemical modification technique known as silylation. Testing revealed that silylation enhances thermal stability of CNC, allowing for superior thermal insulation performance. The thermal characteristics, combined with reduced environmental and human health risks advance the creation of safer flame retardants.
