EC Committee Publishes Updated Guidance on Safety Assessment of Nanomaterials in Cosmetics

The European Commission’s (EC) Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has published an updated Guidance on the Safety Assessment of Nanomaterials in Cosmetics. The guidance covers state of the art knowledge on demonstrating the safety of nanomaterials in cosmetics, as well as requirements for nanomaterial safety dossier preparations. The guidance also covers materials that are considered nanomaterials for cosmetic applications, as well as important aspects of their safety demonstration. Updates adopted in the revised guidance include an emphasis on new alternative testing methods for safety evaluations and updating the text to reflect the current state of knowledge, including technical and scientific progress, for the safety assessments of nanomaterials.
