Livestock Environment Changes Human Microbiome

A group of researchers at the South China Agricultural University in Guangzhou have discovered that the gut microbiome of humans can be changed by a livestock farm’s environment. The researchers compared fecal samples of 14 veterinarian students during a 3-month internship at large scale pig farms and found that antibiotic-resistant genes were transferred to the students from pigs treated with antibiotics.
