Living Algae Clothing Reduces Carbon Emissions

Working with researchers from the University of British Columbia, Canadian-Iranian designer Roya Aghighi has created a bio-fabricated textile made from algae. This sheer, living textile, called Biogarmentry, is designed to help reduce international carbon emissions and change the relationship people have with their clothing. Creating a living connection to clothing is intended to fight ‘fast-fashion consumption’ that contributes to around 10% of all greenhouse gasses emitted globally from the fashion industry. Start-ups in the United States and China are working to scale up manufacturing of these carbon-negative fabrics.
