Vireo Advisor’s Dr. Jo Anne Shatkin and Dr. Kimberly Ong Co-Author “Current Characterization Methods for Cellulose Nanomaterials”

Vireo Advisor’s Dr. Jo Anne Shatkin and Dr. Kimberly Ong co-authored “Current characterization methods for cellulose nanomaterials” which was led by Johan Foster of Virginia Tech and Robert Moon of the USFS Forest Products Laboratory and just published in Chemical Society Reviews. The review puts forth best practices, physical and chemical characterization methods, and an approach for health and safety characterization for two distinct forms of cellulose nanomaterials (CNM): cellulose nanocrystals and cellulose nanofibrils. Specific methods and techniques are discussed for characterizing CNM including particle morphology, surface chemistry, surface charge, purity, crystallinity, rheological properties, mechanical properties, and human/ecological toxicity.
