Celanese Introduces a Biodegradable Alternative to Petrochemical Plastics

Cellulose acetate has been around for more than a century; however, it was largely displaced by petrochemical thermoplastics in the 60’s. As demand for a more biodegradable, environmentally sustainable alternative to petrochemical plastics rises, Celanese has launched BlueRidge, a cellulose acetate product line which is backyard compostable and biodegradable. The cellulose acetate is derived largely from wood pulp and has a look and feel similar to traditional plastic. Celanese also includes biobased plasticizers so it can be processed with standard thermoplastic techniques.
