New York State Working to Ban Polystyrene Foam Food Containers

New York State could soon join Maine and become the second U.S. state to ban polystyrene food containers. A proposal by Governor Andrew Cuomo would enact a statewide ban on single-use polystyrene food containers and packaging peanuts by 2022. The proposal follows other environmental actions in New York state, including a ban on most types of single-use plastic bags (taking effect March 2020) and an approved climate change plan to eliminate net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 by transitioning to renewable energy sources.
