Resources now available to help companies using advanced materials to combat COVID-19 navigate regulatory clearances in the US

Vireo Advisors is a proud member of the Advanced Material Pandemic & Future Preparedness Taskforce (AMPT). AMPT is an international public-benefit initiative focused on using advanced materials and technologies to help solve some of humanities most pressing challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of the Applied Public Health & Environmental, Health, and Safety Working Group, Vireo Advisors has developed several resources to help companies using advanced materials, such as nanotechnologies, to combat SARS-CoV-2 navigate regulatory requirement to get their products to market safely and efficiently.

For companies using advanced materials to help kill or control pathogens (including viruses, bacteria and fungi, known as ‘microbes’), a biocide registration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is required. Vireo has developed an ‘Overview of the Biocide Registration Process’ to help companies understand their requirements and timeline for approval. This is intended as a high-level overview of the process and requirements.

One of the first steps in competing a Biocide Registration is proving that your material or technology is effective in killing the SARS-CoV-2 virus (or other microbe of interest). To help companies navigate these requirements, Vireo has also published a guidance document on ‘Virucidal Efficacy Testing’ that outlines currently accepted models, standard methods, and requirements for completing efficacy testing toward a US Biocidal Registration.
